How to Prepare

What to Bring

There are a few things to keep in mind before joining us for your first movement session.

A towel, clean grip socks and a water bottle

For your comfort and hygiene and in consideration of other clientele, please wear clean grip socks and bring a towel to each exercise session. Staying hydrated is essential for any workout so a water bottle is recommended.  Grip socks are available for purchase at the studio.

Comfortable, movement-appropriate clothing

Wear clothes that allow for you to move freely, such as exercise wear, leggings and shorts. Business attire, belts and jeans would not allow sufficient mobility to participate.

A positive mindset

The GLA:D® program is designed to be safe and effective, interspersed with intentional challenges when it is appropriate for you to progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I participate in GLA:D®?

Anyone who experiences any hip and/or knee osteoarthritis symptoms, regardless of severity, may be able to participate in GLA:D® Australia.  Participation in our Balance & Mobility class or rehab with our physios may be recommended.

You might not be eligible to participate in the program if:

  • You have other reasons for your hip and/or knee pain, including tumours, inflammatory joint disease, the result of hip fracture, and soft tissue or connective tissue problems
  • You have other symptoms that are more pronounced than the osteoarthritis problems (for example, chronic generalised pain or fibromyalgia)
What is the typical treatment for osteoarthritis?

OA is the most common lifestyle disease in individuals 65 years of age and older, but can also affect individuals as young as 30 years of age. Current national and international clinical guidelines recommend patient education, exercise and weight loss as the first line of treatment for osteoarthritis.

In Australia, treatment usually focuses on surgery, however, the GLA:D® Australia program offers a safe alternative, conservative management that may avoid the need for surgery.

Do I need a physician referral?

You do not need a referral from your doctor, however, you may be eligible for a rebate from Medicare for some of the cost of the programme, if deemed appropriate by your GP.

How long does the program last?

GLA:D® is a standardised, but individualised, treatment program consisting of two patient education sessions and at least 12 neuromuscular exercise therapy sessions. All sessions are group-based and supervised by our certified physios.  You may progress to our Balance & Mobility class following completion of the GLA:D® programme.

GLA:D® Class Packages

Class packages are available for GLA:D® Programme participants and those that progress to the Balance & Mobility class which may be claimable through your private health fund, making this a cost-effective option to manage arthritis in the long term.
